Our Challenge

Barwaaqo’s success is crucial for Somali girls’ hope for a better tomorrow.

Somaliland History

Somalia and Somaliland are located in the “Horn of Africa” in the easternmost peninsula of Northeast Africa. In May 1991, after a brutal civil war, the Republic of Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia. Somaliland has made great strides, including establishing a stable government with peaceful elections, but it remains unrecognized internationally and still faces significant challenges in infrastructure development, unemployment and opportunities for women.

The Future Need

While overall unemployment is over 75% in Somaliland, female youth unemployment is a staggering 83% and less than 10% of all teachers are female. Somali girls desperately need more positive female role models and educational opportunities that prepare them for careers that can fulfill their dreams and make a true difference to society.
